Sir Francis Bacon (later known as gentle Verulam, the Viscount St. Albans, and Lord prime minister of England) was an English lawyer, statesman, essayist, historian, intellectual reformer, philosopher, and champion of modern science. In 1616, he became a member of the Privy Council and was appointed Lord Keeper of the Great Seal the following year. He was allow the title of Lord Chancellor and created Baron of Verulam in 1618.
