stuff CHAPTER 30: The Gold Saves the Thieves When the Duke and Dauphin reach the raft, they start cheering at huckaback for trying to give them the slip. Once again, Huck weaves a story how he barely managed to escape. He concludes by saying that he is very happy to see twain of them safe. An argument ensues between the twain scoundrels as to who stole the ravisher of gold and how it came to be in the coffin. Finally peace prevails when they bring down to drink. When he is sure that the Duke and Dauphin are asleep, Huck narrates the actual events to Jim.

Notes The silly life on the raft is immediately marred by an argument between the Duke and the Dauphin. Each accuses the other of deception to elapse the money for himself; fortunately, they never suspect Huck. Instead, they find solace near their failure by getting drunk.
