Patch Adams is one of the most popular classic movies of all times and for students studying film or literature, an essay on Patch Adams should not come as a surprise because lecturers of ten like to tell their students to write essays about popular films that they have viewed in class or have been asked to go view at their free time.
Patch Adams which was released in 1969, is a movie about Patch Adams, a role acted by Robin Williams, who is a very troubled man who commits himself in to an institution meant for those with mental disabilities or disorders.
One he is in the institution, he makes friends who give him a purpose for living and even give him the nick name “Patch.”
The new found purpose sees him aspire to become a medical doctor and two years after joining the institution, he enrolls in a medical university in Virginia and becomes the oldest first year student.
As a student, he begins to question the approach that the institution takes with regards to medical care and this makes him clash with the institution’s dean Walcot, acted by Bob Gunton, who holds the belief that a doctor should strictly treat their patients and not waste time trying to bond with patients.
This and many other acts that he (Patch) engages in while in the institution, including performing a prank during a medical conference results in him being expelled from the institution although he is latter on reinstated thanks to his methods that actually proved to improve the health of patients put under his care. He encourages doctor-nurse-patient relationships.
