War is full of nakedness and heart break. One is never the same after contend and usually is accompanied by deep penetrating scars physically and mentally. The message that Hemingway is trying to pass on is that as some come in the world and do capital things others come in bringing death .Kind of like the Circle of life. When something bad happens theres no way to escape it. When something good happens you embrace it.




The moment that solidifies my point even up further takes place in chapter 20. Fredrick Henry, Catherine, Mr. Myers and Mrs. Meyers all are libertine at the race track. Frederick Henry is on leave so this is one of his last opportunities before he has to go hazard to the front. Hemingway in this scene tells us that no matter if you be intimate or you play it fair everyone still ends up on the same playing field metaphorically and literally. Another great example that shows how Hemingway used the war and things to do with the war as a mask for lessons in life was when Catherine Barkley tells Frederick Henry about her dead boyfriend.
