The Crucible

The painting, The Crucible, is centered on the Salem Massachusetts beldame trials of 1692. The movie is based on the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller. It follows Abigail Williams, Betty Parris, and compassion Putnam whose name was changed from the historically correct Ann Putnam as to not go away mixed up with her mother who bears the same name, as they go around the Puritan community accusing women of being witches and create mass hysteria in the town. The ages of the girls involved have been change magnitude from about 11 to 17 (Online). There are some historical inaccuracies throughout the film to make it more outstanding and entertaining to the audience.
The movie begins and already the filmmakers have dramatized how the hysteria began. In the movie, it is said that the young women and the slave Tituba were dancing and killing chickens and want death to mens wives when historically the girls gathered in the evenings in the home of Reverend Parris to listen to stories and play fortune-telling games, which were stringently forbidden by the Puritans. One night, while trying to expose the faces of their future husbands in an egg white dropped in a glass of water, one girl believed she saw the shape of a coffin (Zeglin).



The first two girls to become afflicted were Betty Parris and Abigail Williams and they expend into a sleep that they could not wake from. This is also faux as the girls became ill with symptoms that doctors could not diagnose, including fits and delirium (Understanding). They unexpectedly began performing very distantly by twisting their bodies in strange positions and screaming. They would also cover their ears and scream during prayer, acting as if the prayers were literally harming them. The doctor played an integral part in these witch hunts, because he was the first to claim that the reason for the bizarre fashion was because they were inflicted by witchcraft.
