Briana Payne 7-22-2012 The Harvey Gant Center The Harvey Gant Center is a museum that teaches the history of the African American Culture. It starts in Africa where our ancestors were taken from their homes and ends in present day America. The museum shows artifacts from Africa that was made, such as cloth, headgear for war, and forms of currency. Seeing their civilized advancements made me wonder wherefore Europeans thought of our people as primitive. The museum has a timeline theme as you walk through the exhibit. I appreciated the way the make was set up because it shows how we earn progressed as a people. The attached exhibit walks you through a mock slave ship. They stock-still have the sound of waves hitting the boat, which made the experience thumb real. We learned that the Africans would be stored here as cargo put side-by-side with little to no room. In the museum, I see how my people were treated as if they were not humans. They gained freedom, equal remedys, and the right to vote but were always treated as if they had no worth. As we walked further into the museum, I wondered why Europeans thought of our lavation as barbaric. I wondered if they felt the need to save us from ourselves. Did they believe we were too primitive for saving so all we were good for was world a slave? The concept of slavery makes me wonder who has the right to deem a human being so worthless that all they can amount to in a common slave. It is not fair.
