WWI 1) The main long term suffers of WWI were nationalism, Imperialism, militarism and alliances. Nationalism was a cause of WWI because during this time everyone was a nationalist which meant they were strong supporters of their countrys rights and interests. Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries. By 1900 the British Empire extended over five continents and France had go of large areas of Africa. With the rise of industrialism countries needed new markets. The amount of lands owned by Britain and France increased the rivalry with Germany who had entered the scramble to get colonies late and scarce had small areas of Africa. Militarism was an separate cause of WWI because many European countries had ontogeny armies especially Russia. The growing armies led to an arms race amidst the powerful countries. An arms race is competition betwixt countries to arouse the most powerful weapons. An alliance is an agreement made between two or more countries to give each other help if it is needed. When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as Allies. A number of alliances had been signed by countries between the years 1879 and 1914. These were significant because they meant that some countries had no option but to declare state of warfare if one of their allies declared war first.

On the initiatory of August 1914 Germany declares war on Russia because of the alliance they have with Austro-Hungary. Then Germany declares war on France.
