For this project, we were required to choose an organization or meeting that has faced business challenges or a downturn in financial performance. To start off we desireed to get a full background on what Circuit City was and how they operated. In 1949, Samuel S. Wurtzel opened a national appliance and television store named Wards Company in Richmond, Virginia. Through the next 10 long time Wurtzel acquired three more stores so that by 1959, there were quatern Wards Company stores grossing $1 million annually. In 1961, Wards Company offered, for the branch time ever, 110,000 shares of the company for $5.38 per share. By 1968, Wards Company expanded to the American Stock Exchange, offering 1,700 shares at $19.75 per share. By 1983, Wards Company had acquired numerous stores across the country and was now grossing $250 million.
In 1984, Wards Company changed their name, and Circuit City Stores Inc. was born. Circuit City was now listed on the rising York Stock Exchange (NYSE) (nydailynews.com).
What exactly was Circuit City you may ask? Circuit City was basically the same as the current electronics super retailer, Best Buy, selling your average electronics interchangeable computers, televisions, CDs, DVDs, and many other products. However, they did sell home appliances, which made them seem more like a Sears also.
